Projects Overview
At MLW Virology, our research focuses on tackling some of the most pressing infectious diseases affecting children and communities in Malawi and across Africa. We combine clinical trials, surveillance, and laboratory innovation to evaluate vaccines, understand disease burden, and improve public health outcomes. Each project reflects our commitment to scientific excellence, ethical transparency, and community impact.
Below are some of our key ongoing and completed projects:
DIASURV
A surveillance project monitoring diarrheal diseases, especially rotavirus, in Malawi. It evaluates vaccine effectiveness (e.g., Rotarix®) and tracks circulating viral strains to understand why vaccines underperform in low-income settings.

NRRV
The Non-Replicating Rotavirus Vaccine (NRRV) project, led with PATH, evaluates an injectable vaccine candidate (Trivalent P2-VP8). Phase 3 trials in Malawi, Ghana, and Zambia assess its ability to prevent severe rotavirus gastroenteritis compared to oral vaccines
