Prof Khuzwayo Jere
Group Lead & Global Health Professor
Prof Jere leads the Virology Research Group at MLW and is a Professor of Global Health at the University of Liverpool. He co-founded the African Enteric Viruses Genome Initiative and oversees Malawi’s Diarrhoea Surveillance Programme. His work focuses on rotavirus evolution, vaccine effectiveness, and immunology
Dr. Prisca Benedicto -Matambo
Deputy Group Lead & Immunology PhD Student
Prisca studies immune imprinting effects of the RV3-BB rotavirus vaccine in Malawian infants. She holds an MSc in Infection, Immunity & Human Disease from University of Leeds and is jointly registered at University of Liverpool and KUHeS
Chimwemwe Mhango
Bioinformatician & PhD Fellow
Chimwemwe specializes in viral evolution and molecular biology. He is characterizing rotavirus strains and studying mechanisms behind emerging variants. He holds a BMLS degree and is pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics
End Chinyama
Laboratory Scientist
End supports molecular diagnostics and surveillance across multiple virology projects including RV3 and VacSurv. He holds a Diploma in Biomedical Sciences and a BSc in Public Health, and is pursuing an MPhil in Molecular Microbiology
Flywell Kaonga
Molecular Biologist & PhD Fellow
Flywell brings expertise in molecular virology, diagnostics, and epidemiology. He holds an MSc in Molecular Biology and is involved in viral surveillance and pathogen detection across MLW studies
Jonathan Mandolo
Research Scientist & PhD Fellow
Jonathan investigates vaccine underperformance in low-income settings, focusing on maternal microbiome and infant gut health. He holds a BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences and an MSc in Bioinformatics, and is pursuing a PhD at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
Enerst Matambo
Lecturer & PhD Fellow
Ernest is a pharmacy lecturer at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and a PhD student at University of Liverpool. He holds MSc degrees in Bioinformatics and Antimicrobial Stewardship, and contributes to MLW’s virology and pharmacogenomics research
Edson Mwinjiwa
Research Scientist
Edson has contributed to clinical and epidemiological research in Malawi, including infectious diseases and HIV-associated conditions. He has published on topics such as cryptococcal meningitis and hazard ratio analyses
Clement Lefu
Community Engagement & Data Analyst
Clement supports MLW Virology through ethics coordination, protocol updates, and staff consultation. He also contributes as a data analyst, transforming complex datasets into clear insights that strengthen research outcomes and community impact.
Clara Heavenly Majego
Pre-Masters Trainee
Clara holds a BSc in Immunology (Malawi University of Science and Technology, 2024). She is a Pre-Master’s Trainee at MLW, contributing to virology projects in immunology, serology, and molecular biology. Previously, she interned with the Maternal and Fetal Health Group on the Trained Immunity Atlas study (TIA).
Vitumbiko Munthali
Senior Research Nurse
Vitumbiko is a registered nurse with experience at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi. At MLW, he supports participant recruitment, follow-up, and clinical procedures in vaccine and virology studies.
Ethel Makwenda
Senior Field Research Assistant
Ethel works with MLW in Blantyre, supporting field operations, participant engagement, and data collection for virology projects. She has prior experience in customer service and project coordination.
Martha Khombe Moyo
Research Nurse
Martha has worked in research since 2012, focusing on paediatric studies. She joined MLW’s Virology Group in 2017 under the Rotamune study. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Development to deepen her expertise in child health
Amidah Luhanga
Pre-MSc Intern (EFGH)
Amidah holds a first-class BSc (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Science from KUHeS. She is exploring the sero-epidemiology of Shigella in Malawi, focusing on antibody responses and population-level immunity. Skilled in Luminex multiplex immunoassays, RStudio, and GraphPad
Mercy Mkwinda
Research Nurse
Mercy has been a licensed research nurse at MLW since 2018, with a diploma in Nursing from St John’s College. She supports participant recruitment, follow-up, and clinical trial procedures
Doreen Galagade
Research Nurse
Doreen contributes to MLW’s virology and infectious disease studies, focusing on participant care and trial support. She is part of the nursing team ensuring protocol adherence and participant safety
Dr Alexander (Alex) Stockdale
Clinical Academic & Collaborator
Alex is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Infectious Diseases at the University of Liverpool. He worked at MLW between 2017–2019 and returned in 2024, leading research on viral hepatitis and HIV in Malawi. His work focuses on hepatitis B/C epidemiology and treatment programmes
Dr. Desiree Witte
Clinical Researcher & Vaccinology Specialist
Dr. Witte is a physician and clinical researcher originally from the Netherlands, with extensive experience in tropical infectious diseases and vaccine studies. She has worked with Médecins Sans Frontières and UNHCR before joining MLW, where she contributes to rotavirus and diarrhoeal disease research. Her work has helped demonstrate the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines in Malawi, reducing diarrhoeal disease burden and strengthening immunization programmes
Maureen Tayamika Ndalama
Pharmacist & Clinical Research Coordinator
Maureen is a pharmacist with a Master’s in Clinical Trials. At MLW, she coordinates virology studies, ensuring protocol compliance and participant safety.
Evelyn Kossam
Group Administrator
Evelyn manages the administrative functions of the MLW Virology group, ensuring smooth coordination of projects, staff support, and day-to-day operations. She plays a key role in maintaining efficiency and fostering collaboration across the team.
Innocent Chibwe
Research Scientist – Infectious Diseases
Innocent is a researcher with the UNC Malawi Project and Public Health Institute of Malawi. His work focuses on cholera outbreaks, rapid diagnostic test evaluations, and genomic epidemiology, contributing to improved public health responses in Malawi.
Dr. Chikondi Malamba-Banda
Laboratory Scientist & Researcher
Chikondi is a PhD-trained researcher jointly affiliated with the University of Liverpool and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. She has extensive experience in laboratory science, public health, and infectious disease research. Her work has focused on HIV diagnostics in infants, immune restoration in people living with HIV, and strengthening laboratory systems in Malawi. She currently serves as Laboratory Manager at UNC Project–Malawi while continuing to collaborate with MLW on virology and immunology studies.
Zomera Msowoya
Lab Technician
Zomera supports the MLW Virology laboratory team by performing diagnostics, sample preparation, and quality control. She contributes to maintaining accuracy in laboratory workflows and assists in delivering high-quality research outputs
Dr. Alox Kamng'ona
Associate Professor of Molecular Biology
Dr. Kamng'ona is an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. He holds a PhD in Infection and Immunity from the University of Liverpool. His research focuses on the human microbiome and its impact on health and disease in African settings, using metagenomics and bioinformatics tools to uncover new insights into infectious disease dynamics.
